Apple iOS 7.1.1 is now seeding, brings minor improvements

Apple quietly released iOS 7.1.1. As its number suggests, the latest firmware update from Cupertino brings minor improvements, security and bug fixes.
The new OS update is 26.1MB large. It improves Touch ID fingerprint recognition, fixes a bug which could impact the responsiveness of the keyboard, and remedies an issue which occurs when Bluetooth keyboards with VoiceOver.

Samsung Project KQ may be the premium Galaxy S5

We've long heard of a more premium version of the Galaxy S5. Newly leaked source code suggests that there is indeed such smartphone and it's in advanced stages of development. The evidence, obtained bySamMobile suggests the project is named "Project KQ", while the S5 had been known internally as merely "Project K". The development process however has been hindered by component shortages.
Project KQ, which may also very well encompass the Galaxy F-line of products, sports a QHD (2560 x 1440 pixels) resolution on a 5.2" display. There's currently no information if it's going to be Super AMOLED.


In a traditional Samsung fashion, Project KQ is set to launch with a couple of different versions, each sporting a different chipset. The model destined for South Korea is going to pack the company's latest octa-core Exynos 5430 chipset. The new silicon features quad 2.1GHz Cortex-A15 and quad 1.5GHz Cortex-A7 cores in addition to an 600MHz ARM Mali GPU. There's also a new display controller to handle the QHD display.
A new HEVC video decoder is going to make 8K UHD playback possible, while a dedicated new audio co-processor, called the Samsung "Seiren", will handle sound encoding and decoding.
If that wasn't enough, the Exynos-based Project KQ will for the very first time utilize an Intel LTE modem (XMM7620). It packs quite a punch supporting speeds of up to 300Mbit/s down and 150Mbit/s up. Only the European version will get this LTE chip, while the Korean market will make do with a Samsung-made LTE modem codenamed Shannon 300 (SS300).
There's no word about the US market, but there is evidence that Samsung will utilize the quad-core Snapdragon 805 chipset in at least one version of the upcoming phone (G906S).
An interesting piece of information is that Samsung developed ten revisions of the Galaxy S5 until it was given the green light to enter production. The source of the information reveals that the first two packed QHD displays, which explains the rumors that were floating around before the actual announcement of the Galaxy S5.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 design hinted by a patent

It was just yesterday when we reported that the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 could feature a tri-sided curved YOUM OLED screen and today Samsung filed a patent that suggests a possible design for the phone.
The patent application shows a concept for a smartphone that features rounded edges on the side - that's where the curved YOUM display would stretch.


As you can see in the image above, Samsung envisions the user interface of the upcoming phone to make use of that curved space. In the example given, the app and settings shortcuts are placed exactly there.
Samsung executive already suggested that the company is experimenting with a new form-factor for the next-gen Galaxy Note. If you want to see how exactly the YOUM display looks like , check out this video demo that Samsung did not too long ago.

OnePlus One specs, photos and camera samples surface

The OnePlus One smartphone is having its announcement on April 23 and as the date nears we've been bombared with new information about the upcoming phone. First up official renders of the phone's StyleSwaps back covers have surfaced. Then, there are new camera samples as well as information regarding the phone's initial availability.

Specifications

Let's get started with the OnePlus One specifications. We already know the phone is featuring a 2.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset with 3GB of RAM as well as a 5.5" full HD JDI display (resulting in a pixel density of 401ppi).


It packs a 3,100mAh battery with OnePlus taunting a "mystery tech" behind it allowing it to last longer between charging times. At the back, there's a 6-piece 13MP f/2.0 Sony Exmor IMX214 camera.
The OnePlus One will come with either 16GB or a 64GB of internal memory and is going to run Android 4.4 KitKat-based CyanogenMod 11S, which has been tailor-made for the phone.
The new information reveals the phone's dimensions and weight. The One measures 152.9 x 75.9 x 8.9mm and weighs 160 grams. Those are nearly the same dimensions as the Oppo Find 7, which launched a month ago. Notably, the One is lighter by 11 grams and thinner by 0.3mm.

StyleSwap back covers

One of the interesting exterior design features of the upcoming OnePlus One is its interchangeable StyleSwap back covers. Oppo teased all the styles that are going to be available, but it's only now that we see them in their full glory.


The StyleSwap covers will be available in different flavors. On the official photo above, there are four different wood styles, a leather and denim ones as well as a cool black and white dotted one.
Despite having a removable back cover, the 3,100mAh battery of the Oneplus One isn't user-replaceable.

Camera samples

In addition to the already outed camera samples we saw a few days ago, new ones are now out. They are taken by photographer Martin Mal, who has won a One smartphone through the company's Photo-Mania competition held in the beginning of April.
Martin says he wanted to test the phone properly, and so he took macro, sunlight, depth of field, and night shots. Here they are.

CyanogenMod 11S

The OnePlus One runs a special version of the popular CyanogenMod 11. It's based on Android 4.4 KitKat and has an added S to it to testify its special nature.
As you'd probably got accustomed to how OnePlus One does things, there have been a few screenshotsthat teased the looks of the UI, but now there are more of them.

As you can see, there's everything you can expect from the base CyanogenMod 11, but the custom theme, launcher, icons and lockscreen are unique to the One.

Accessories

And if the leaks above weren't enough, photos of the microUSB cable and the pin for the SIM-card tray are now available as well. The SIM pin is stylish, but the microUSB cable is puzzling.

It's a regular microUSB cable, but the picture shows a Lightning connector extension that you can attach to it. There's no information at this poin if the One will have a Lightning port, but that seems unlikely.

Availability

OnePlus will release the One in 16 countries at first following the phone's official announcement on April 23. The phone will retail for less than $400/€350. The company also announced it will employ an Invitation system for purchasing the One.
OnePlus anticipates big interest from consumers for its first product and doesn't want to have people waiting by producing the One in batches. Here's the company's solution.

LG isai FL leaked in pink along with specifications

We have seen couple of images of the LG isai FL for Japan before. Although this particular handset will be exclusive to the Japanese market, it is widely believed that the upcoming LG G3 will be based on this device.

In the past we have seen the phone in white and blue colors. The same source - evleaks - has now revealed a bright pink shade, which is almost customary for the Japanese market.
Along with that we also have some specs this time, including a quad-core Snapdragon 801 SoC clocked at 2.5GHz, 5.5-inch LCD rumored to be at 2560x1440 resolution, 2GB RAM, 32GB internal memory with microSD support, 3000mAh battery, IPX7 rating which means it is water resistant and Android 4.4 KitKat.

Specs of unannounced Motorola Moto E leak out

Alleged specs of the yet to be announced Motorola Moto E leaked out. When launched, the smartphone will slot below the Moto G in the manufacturer’s product range.
Leaked specs of the Moto E include a 1.2GHz dual-core CPU, 1GB of RAM, and 4GB of built-in memory. The latter will likely be further expandable, as 4GB will not get you anywhere in terms of available storage these days.
The display of the Moto E is a 4.3" unit with unknown resolution (we would bet on a sub-720p screen). A 5MP main camera, front-facing snapper, 1,900mAh battery, FM radio, and Android 4.4 KitKat round up the list of known specifications.
The leaked 124.8 x 64.8 x 6.2mm physical measures of the Moto E are truly impressive. The handset will be significantly more elegant than both the Moto G (11.6mm thick) and the Moto X (10.4mm thick).
The Moto E is tipped to arrive in the coming weeks on the Mexican wireless carrier Telcel with the model number XT1021. Its price tag is certain to be lower than that of the Moto G.

LTE-capable ZTE Star 1 with 5" display goes official

ZTE has officially announced a new mid-range smartphone named Star 1 in China. The newest offering from the company has a metal frame and a glass back and looks quite sleek in those official photos.
ZTE Star 1 comes with a 5-inch OGS display with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels and offers 178-degree wide viewing angle. The smartphone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 chipset with a 1.6 GHz quad-core processor along with Adreno 305 GPU and 2 GB of RAM.
The 8 megapixel rear camera with dual LED flash and 5 megapixel front facing shooter completes the camera department. There is 16 GB of internal memory that can be expanded by up to 64 GB via a microSD card. Connectivity options for the Star 1 include 4G LTE, 3G, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth with A2DP, USB OTG and GPS.
ZTE Star 1 runs on Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box and the juice for the smartphone is provided by a 2,300mAh battery.
The Star 1 will be available in pink, black and white color and will cost CNY1,399 (about $225). The device will go on sale in China later this month.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 rumored to feature 3-sided YOUM display

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is going to be the first smartphone from the company to pack its YOUM flexible OLED display technology, a new report says. The information comes from Korean media citing insider sources and further elaborates that the display is going to be three-sided.


Three-sided implicates that the display has its left and right sides bent to create additional zones where notifications from messages, email, incoming calls can appear.
In fact, here's a demo from 2013 where Samsung showcased its 3-sided YOUM display prototype. From 1:35 onwards, the video demonstrates the advantages that such an implementation brings.
Additionally, Reuters reports of a Samsung representative who has confirmed that the company is working on a new form factor. This new form factor could very well be what you just saw in the video above.
Traditionally, Samsung unveils the Galaxy Note smartphones in September at the IFA show in Berlin. We'll see if the company will keep the tradition alive this year.

LTE-capable Oppo R1S set to launch on April 25 in China

An updated Oppo R1 version is set to launch next Friday, on April 25 in China. Dubbed Oppo R1S, the newcomer will feature 4G LTE connectivity with support for Chinese and global frequencies, as well as updated internals.

The Oppo R1S will reportedly swap the 3G-only MediaTek SoC for an LTE-capable Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 chipset with 1.6GHz quad-core CPU. The onboard RAM and the camera unit of the newcomer are also updated to 2GB and 13MP respectively. The 3G-capable Oppo R1 comes with a gig of RAM and an 8MP main shooter.
Pricing of the Oppo R1S is yet to be annoucned. The smartphone will reportedly be bundled with a free mobile wireless speaker and a 4,000mAh external battery at launch.

Is the iPhone 6 really as big as this alleged battery leak suggests?


The latest leaks regarding the iPhone 6 have suggested its screen will be larger than any iPhone past, and the most recent one points to the same.
This image, seen on Nowhereelse.fr, is allegedly of the new iPhone's battery, and it looks like it comes straight from the factory floor.
But more importantly the battery looks too big to fit inside any existing iPhone, including the iPhone 5S.
The last leak showed supposed iPhone 6 molds that had room for about 4.7 inches of Apple-y goodness, and this battery matches up nicely with that.

There are also rumors of a 5.5-inch new iPhone, but the battery seen here looks only slightly longer than the iPhone 5S's, so this leak does not directly support the existence of an even larger iPhone.

The Sennheiser Momentum on-ear headphones are the company’s most fashionable personal audio product at the moment. The headset brings the head-turning looks of the Sennheiser Momentum headphones in a more compact form factor, coupled with a lower price tag.

Ergonomics
The Sennheiser Momentum on-ear headphones tip the scale 160 grams including the cable and the remote control, so long stretches of use should not be an issue. The weight is in line for a headset in this segment.
The ear pads, in addition to being covered in Alcantara, are filled with two layers of cushy foam. The ear cups are attached to ball joints which easily swivel for a right fit every time.
The three-button remote control is one of the most comfortable I have experienced. Its buttons are well-spaced, pleasant to touch, and easy to find while on the go. The audio cable of the headset is 1.4m long and unsurprisingly tangle-free.

Overall, the Momentum on-ear headphones deserve high marks for their ergonomics. Thanks to the premium materials used in their construction, the headphones deliver amazing tactile feel too.
Sound
Sennheiser has equipped the Momentum on-ear headphones with proprietary 18 Ohm transducers whose frequency response ranges between 16 and 22,000 Hz. The sound pressure level tops out at 112 dB, while the total harmonic distortion sits below 0.5%.
The real-life sonic experience which the Sennheiser Momentum on-ear headphones deliver is in line with the high expectations which the brand commands. In a segment dominated by bass-centric offerings, the headset stood out with clear, well-balanced regardless of the music style I played.
The low range produced by the headset impressed with its depth and natural feel. Bass sounds pleasant and packs a great deal of punch when you want to, without trying to overtake the entire sonic experience.
The highs are accurate and devoid of any commonly seen harshness; playing classical music was really enjoyable. The mid-range is good considering the size of the headset’s drivers and its compact nature.
Audio quality during phone calls was good.
Final word
The Sennheiser Momentum on-ear headphones combine eye-grabbing timeless design, unmatched tactility, and great sound in a compact package. The headset should be on the shortlist of anyone looking for an on-ear daily driver with $200 to spend.

The HTC One M8 is king of touch screen response time

Looks like HTC can add another feather in the cap of the One M8 as the phone’s screen has the fastest touch-screen registry time of any smartphone.
46ms is all it takes for the One M8 to recognize your touch input; the first phone to go under 50ms.
Improved latency speeds are part of the cell phone spec revolution, it appears. In addition to better cameras, processors, high resolution screens, and storage space, making your cell phone quicker to respond to your touch has been added to that list of necessary improvements.
Research indicates that most touchscreen devices, both phones and tablets, that are 6 months and older averaged a latency speed of 80ms-250ms. Poorer latency speeds are most notable on applications that require dragging motions, like the popular game, Fruit Ninja.
By comparison, the Samsung Note 3 has a latency of 63ms, and the iPhone 5s takes 75ms to register a touch.
Tablets seem to take a longer time to register presses. The Kindle Fire HD has 114ms latency. The Surface RT fares better with 92ms, but is nowhere near Microsoft’s ideal time: 1ms.
The issue of latency is a tricky one, as it is difficult to attribute a single component of a device that improves touch-speed. It isn’t only RAM or raw processing power, but a combination of factors.

Samsung announces Galaxy ACE Style smartphone

Samsung has announced a new mid-range Android smartphone aimed at the younger audience. Called the Galaxy Ace Style, the phone is said to have a "a fun, unique design with an enhanced camera and advanced features for superior performance."

The Galaxy ACE Style has a 4.0-inch, WVGA display TFT LCD, 1.2GHz dual-core CPU, 512MB RAM, 4GB internal memory with microSD card support, 5 megapixel rear camera with autofocus, VGA front camera, Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi b/g/n, NFC, 1,500mAh battery and Android 4.4.2 KitKat with Samsung's TouchWiz Essence UI on top.
The Samsung Galaxy ACE Style will be available globally in April in Cream White and Dark Gray colors.

100k Xiaomi Redmi Notes sold in 34 minutes

Xiaomi is known for their dirt-cheap Android devices that don't skimp out on high-end hardware or quality, so it's no surprise that every time a new device of theirs is released, consumers gobble it up and help the company to set some pretty impressive sales records.
The Xiaomi Redmi Note is no different, and the Chinese manufacturer managed to sell 100,000 units of the device in only 34 minutes. This still doesn't match the unbelievable 4-minute, 100k sale of their Hongmi in November 2013, but it is still a feat nonetheless.


The Redmi costs $161 (999 Yuan) and boasts a 5.5” 720 x 1280 display, a 1.7GHz octa-core chipset, 2GB RAM, 16GB internal storage, a 13MP camera, 3200mAh battery, and Android 4.2.2. For $161, you are getting a beast of a phablet.
Xiaomi released a less-impressively spec'd version of the the phone for $129 (799 Yuan), which still has an octa-core chip, just clocked at 1.4GHz, and only 1GB RAM and 8GB internal storage. Everything else is the same. However, the extra RAM alone is worth the additional $32, so it is hard to imagine who would purchase the lower cost version if the $161 Redmi is available.
